North Country

Central Upstate New York’s North Country boasts a quality lifestyle featuring big city services in a resort community setting. That's why, after work, you can vacation permanently in your free time. What could be finer than enjoying a boat ride after a long day's work in the summer, or in the winter, going skiing, hunting or snowmobiling on the weekend?

Lake Placid, home to 2 Winter Olympics in the 20th century, boasts some of the finest winter sport activities in the nation.

New York State’s North Country consists of six Upstate New York counties, including Jefferson County, which borders Lake Ontario to the west and the 1000 Islands area of the St. Lawrence River to the north. The area is home to the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division (L.I.) at Fort Drum, near Watertown. The Montreal-Ottawa-Toronto corridor, which has more than 70 percent of Canada's retail purchasing power, can be reached by first-class highway in less than a day. The western portion of the nation's largest forest preserve, the Adirondack Park, is located in Lewis County. Chartered at the turn of the century to be "forever wild," the Adirondack Park is a six million acre natural sanctuary of public and private land protected under the state constitution. Lake Ontario graciously dumps 200 to 300 inches of snow on Tug Hill each winter, providing some of the best cross country skiing and snowmobiling east of the Rockies. Through the efforts of the many Snowmobile Clubs in the region, the Trail System provides you access to the beauty of the Tug Hill Region. Many institutions of higher learning are within easy access of the region, including the Canton College of Technology, Clarkson University, the Crane School of Music, Paul Smith's College, and St. Lawrence University
